As the photoperiod shortens and temperatures cool green chlorophyl dies leaving behind red, orange or yellow carotenoids to color the leaves before falling from the tree. These changing leaves briefly provide spectacularly vibrant colors to the mountain landscapes of Colorado and Wyoming.
